Diet Myth: You Have to Eat Less to Lose Weight

THE FLAW: Reducing your consumption of foods high in calories, saturated fats and simple carbohydrates is indeed beneficial for weight loss. However, when you simply cut portions of high-calorie fare without replacing them with nutritious, fiber-rich foods, you can be left feeling hungry and restricted, which may increase your odds of overeating later or giving up entirely.

THE FIX: When cutting servings of high-calorie foods, replace them with fiber-rich fruits or vegetables, suggests Roper St. Francis Healthcare affiliated dietitian Erin Castle, RD, LD. “This will help you feel satisfied after your meal and stay full longer.” Imagine 13 Cheetos Puffs next to 47 baby carrots. The two groups contain the same amount of calories, but the baby carrots have 8.5g of fiber versus 1g in the Cheetos. High-fat, simple carbs (like those in the Cheetos) leave you feeling sluggish and hungry again sooner, whereas fiber-rich, low-fat and low-calorie fruits or vegetables keep you full longer and fuel your body.
